Less is more or more is less? Addressing the art of accessorizing in pageant wardrobe
Miss Grand International has earned its spot as one of the most talked about pageants out there along with its focus on detailed outfits AND accessories. Trust me when I say this, Miss Grand International has become the powerhouse of iconic fashion statements and expressions.

Read along these ways of elevating your personal wardrobe by right accessories that would have everyone guessing, WHO'S that GIRL?!
Referencing the biggest Pop culture Moment? yes!
Most of these “fashion statements” are executed flawlessly through unforgettable accessories. The inspiration behind Maria Alejandra Lopez’s (2nd Runner Up at Miss Grand International 2023) Preliminary gown was none other than Beyonce. The iconic black hat and the black full-length gloves are powerful accessories that are not frequently seen in pageants. This proves the extent of influence of mainstream media on the pageant world.
Match the wardrobe, like literally!
Both these outfits from Miss Grand Preliminary 2023 highlight the impact of accessories. Miss Grand Costa Rica, Kristell Ruiz Freeman reflects much greater awareness on the impact of factors other than the gown. Kristell is SLAYING the “alluring golden and white” vibe. She does not go overboard with her accessories but at the same time uses it to accentuate her outfit.
Her bronze bracelets match the bodice of her dress perfectly, connected through threads of white beads. It is obvious that white and gold are the core of Kristell’s gown. Even her earrings contain a white crystal with a gold body effortlessly complementing her ensemble. Although, I do feel golden peep toe pumps would’ve completed the outfit she was going for.
Learn to accessorize, Minimally for greater impact:
In contrast to Kristell, Miss Grand Albania’s outfit seems bare, with no necklace, bracelet or even earrings. Based on her golden high heels, one would think, she’d go for matching golden jewellery, especially a golden waist chain, to try to complete the look.
So, is bigger and flashier jewellery the “go to” look? Not always.
Sometimes accessories take the intended look and focus away from the contestant and might even clash with the outfit or other accessories.
Just like with this Miss Grand 2022 Preliminary look. There is way too much happening here. The regal shoulder necklace, which fits the gorgeous gown like they were born together, is literally booted out of focus because of the unnecessarily long and dangly earrings that are clashing with the neckpiece.
Pairing golden and silver accessories together is another big no-no. Not only are her accessories barely noticeable, but the silver earrings paired with plain matching golden bracelets don't mesh well together. Staying consistent with the ‘silver and baby-pink' theme would’ve been the delegate’s best bet, considering the silver work around the waist and neckline of the gown.
To sum it up, jewellery and other accessories cannot in themselves uphold the beauty of an outfit but they can surely augment the impact of the gown to enhance its appearance. Throughout the years the importance of accessories has been rising continuously and would continue to be in focus for several years to come, even extending to other international pageants. Accessorizing in moderation is key. So, pick your accessories with caution!
