Planning white colour as your finale gown? Here's what we think!

The fierce walk, frank answers, being oneself; what else crowns the winner at the Miss Supranational pageant? The color of evening gowns? Perhaps.

Is it just a coincidence that the most Miss Supranational winners have worn white or silver gowns in the finale of the contest?

We’re here to find out whether the color of your evening gown, that is, the last impression of your personality, wins you pageants.

In the history of Miss Supranational pageants, 7 out of 14 winners wore white and/or silver finale gowns. Coincidence? I think not! Nonetheless, these gowns have gone through a major transition throughout the years.

White Gowns, the breakout

The early winners of the contest (in 2010, 2013 and 2014) cladded plain white full length white satin gowns bearing much resemblance to wedding gowns.

Although they must’ve hoped to look youthful as white generally symbolizes youth and innocence; I doubt the end result matched their expectations. I believe a plain gown, especially a plain white gown, denotes a lack of representation of identity. It signifies more “wedding gown” rather than “future Miss Supranational”.

Although Mutya Johanna Datul, the 2013 winner’s finale gown was not much different from a wedding gown, much like the other winners, it was certainly more detailed. Rather than a “simple” white look, she opted for a visible white sparkling necklace and full-length mesh sleeves paired confidently with a bracelet that matched the winner’s crown. The bracelet was albeit a small detail, but radiated pure certainty and confidence as one final attempt to seal her victory.

Redeeming in white, say hello to SILVER

In the more recent years of the pageant, most contestants turned to predominantly silver sparkling gowns rather than plain and bride-like finale gowns.

Except for 2020 when the pageant was postponed due to the pandemic, in the consecutive years from 2017 to 2021, the ladies with sequined white gowns were crowned the winners. Quite a pattern, isn't it? They definitely presented a youthful and beautiful look, giving the brand exactly what it sought.

Valeria Vázquez Latorre (Miss Supranational 2018) and Anntonia Porsild (Miss Supranational 2019), surely did their homework well to opt for a silver gown with white base in the finale with a drastically different look from the previous winners. Valeria’s gown was strapless and body-hugging in contrast to the mermaid fit of Miss Supranational 2017. This also marked a swift transition of the winners being more of an energetic IT girl.

This was solidified in Anntonia’s V-cut neck, the dramatic high side slit and tied up hair which set her apart from the other contestants. The two fit into previous winners’ looks just enough whilst being themselves too.

Miss Supranational 2021 seems to have taken her gown inspiration almost entirely from Valeria. Barring the asymmetrical sleeved torso and the low back slit, Chanique Rabe’s evening gown hardly sets her apart. The silver work on a white gown, the body-hugging lower half, long matching earrings and the side partitioned, let-down hair seem all too familiar. But it seems like this strategy still worked for her after all!

The narrative around white or silver gowns is changing this time around as 2016, 2022 and 2023 have added the wonderful colours in the legacy of Miss Supranational.

So far it does seem like wearing a white finale gown might just get you some brownie points at least at the Miss Supranational pageant. But that is most certainly only one of the few factors that determine the winners. Sorta keeps you on your toes, doesn’t it?
